Shot entirely in and around Atlanta, Georgia between 2001 and 2007,
"artist unknown" was a labor of love for filmmaker Sean Irish.
Created in a collaborative style, the actors and director workshopped the treatment
for "artist unknown", often improvising lines for scenes just minutes prior to filming.
A not-so-strict adherence to the guidelines for Dogme 95 school of filmmaking was observed throughout (though no application was ever submitted).

Originally submitted to the 2005 Park City Film Music Festival as a roughcut under a temporary title ("djembemon"), festival judges liked the film enough to create a new
awards category that year, "Best Original Music", and gave the project top honors in that category at the festival. Throughout the film, the efforts of composers Krispin Harker
("Jon Thorson", the film's lead character) and Lance Haugan ("Lance") can be heard in
the background - sometimes as a melody, sometimes as a thought or a feeling in the wind.
